Advanced Human Trafficking Investigation & Prosecution

General Description

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Virginia State Police (VSP) in a partnership with Law Enforcement Training Academy and Consultation (LETAC) is pleased to offer a 2- day training opportunity for law enforcement investigators and Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ who are involved with investigating and prosecuting human trafficking cases. This course provides human trafficking investigators and prosecutors with the knowledge necessary to effectively build a complete human trafficking investigation as a team to maximize the potential for a successful prosecution.

Course Objectives

  • Students will understand and be able to recognize indicators of trafficking;
  • Students will understand how to transition from a routine call to a human trafficking incident;
  • Students will understand human trafficking terminology;
  • Students will be able to understand evidence to look for in a human trafficking incident;
  • Students will be able to look for electronic evidence on a cell phone;
  • Students will understand basic concept of Special Victims Methodology and risk factors;
  • Students will understand how to interview the suspect and victim.

Intended Audience

This training is open to sworn law enforcement investigators, Commonwealth’s Attorneys’, and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ who are involved in human trafficking investigations.

Priority registration will be given to localities that register with a minimum of 1 Human Trafficking Investigator and 1 Commonwealth’s Attorney or Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. Individual registrations will be allowed, dependent on capacity.

Partial In-Service Credit

Partial in-service credit for this course will be available.

Travel, Lodging, and Meals

Transportation, lodging, and some meals are the responsibility of the participant. Lunch will be provided.

Times

Registration begins at 7:30 am. Training will begin at 8:00 am and conclude at 5:00 pm each day.

Cost & Registration

There is no fee associated with this training. Pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registrations system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination of acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
