The DCJS Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety is pleased to announce a webinar series to help behavioral threat assessment team members, as well as school staff, better recognize and respond to challenges operating in online and virtual platforms. This three-part series will be conducted during morning and afternoon sessions.
A look inside the world of a Digital Threat Assessment ® (DTA) Threat Analyst. Learn why DTA is critical to a complete Threat Assessment, how it works and can be implemented online and off-line, popular apps and social media to be aware of, and how to find various social media posts coming out of your school and community.
This webinar dispels common misconceptions about targeted attackers always being bullied loners by demonstrating the diversity of perpetrators. It then presents a psychological typology of school shooters, dividing them into three categories: psychopathic, psychotic, and traumatized. A case example of each of the three types is presented to demonstrate the range of perpetrators and the contributing factors in their violence.
Learn how to utilize Google searches to assist in your Threat Assessments. Receive tools and understanding on how to put Google search to work for you to find individuals who are the subject of your threat assessment, as well those tagged to your school and community.
School attackers engage in a wide range of aberrant behaviors as they prepare for their attacks. This webinar presents examples from school shootings of pre-attack behaviors that could have led to threat assessments and interventions, but did not. The term “insider references” refers to the subtle ways that school shooters often provide clues about their interests and plans; without knowing how to read between the lines, these clues are often missed. Knowing the many ways that warning signs can be manifested is critical to violence prevention.
Use the tools received in sessions 1 (DTA Fundamentals) and 2 (Utilizing Google) to find a threat makers’ digital footprint. Locate social media accounts and learn to identify whether the images the user posts are stock or unique.
A potential source of information that is often overlooked is the presence of warning signs in student assignments. This webinar examines actual homework assignments of school shooters to highlight how subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) warning signs appear in student work. Utilizing these warning signs as a starting point for a threat assessment investigation, it then demonstrates the amount of information that could have been gathered if an inquiry had been conducted.
This training is being offered to behavioral threat assessment team members, instructional staff, support staff, central office personnel, law enforcement officers and school security officers.
Law enforcement, school security officers, and campus security officers will receive partial in-service credit hours for this training.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the webinar and evaluation to use towards their professional development.
