The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is proud to sponsor an interactive 8 - hour training in the Mental Health First Aid curriculum focused on helping adults who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or in a crisis.
Mental Health First Aid presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. Those who take the 8-hour course to certify as Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
Mental Health First Aid teaches a five-step action plan, ALGEE, for individuals to provide help to someone who may be in crisis.
Assess for risk of suicide or harm
Listen nonjudgmentally
Give reassurance and information
Encourage appropriate professional help
Encourage self-help and other support strategies
Intended Audience
Campus police officers, municipal law enforcement, campus security officers, campus administrators, and staff.
Partial In-Service Credit
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers and security officers will be available.
