Wesley "Wes" Smallwood, serves as the Pretrial Services Coordinator for the development, implementation and operation of local pretrial services in Virginia. This position is also responsible for all of DCJS’ codified responsibilities related to jail planning. In this role, Wes provides technical assistance, training, and program development to local pretrial services programs across Virginia. Wes also assists state legislative, judicial and administrative branches of government with analysis of issues, needs and requirements for the interface of local pretrial and probation services, jail services, arrest, and related bail practices.
Prior to coming to DCJS, Wes spent the previous decade in the Community Corrections and Pretrial Services field with Offender Aid and Restoration-Jefferson Area Community Corrections (OAR-JACC) of Charlottesville, VA. Most recently, he served as the Pretrial & Local Probation Program Manager for the five counties of Orange, Madison, Louisa, Fluvanna, and Greene. Wes also spent time as a Local Probation Officer, Pretrial Officer, and Senior Pretrial Officer during his tenure at OAR-JACC. A Virginia native from Martinsville, VA, Wes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Averett University and resides with his wife, Anna in Louisa, VA. When not working, Wes is likely to be found fishing from his kayak while enjoying the numerous lakes and rivers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
