Human Trafficking Identification for Criminal Justice and First Responders

Eligible Participants: Criminal justice professionals and first responders, including sworn law enforcement, fire and EMS, dispatchers, DJJ, pretrial and probation, corrections, court services, victim witness

Description: Victims of human trafficking rarely self-identify. Proactive victim identification is a vital component to fighting human trafficking. To effectively build this skill set, it is imperative that criminal justice professionals receive a solid foundational understanding of human trafficking. Using body cam footage from a real human trafficking case, participants will be provided the opportunity to look for and evaluate the signs of human trafficking in a real-life setting. 

This training is facilitated by Human Trafficking Institute (HTI). 

Training Objectives: 

  • Increase awareness and understanding of human trafficking in Virginia and dispel common myths and misconceptions.
  • Learn common indicators of human trafficking and increase victim identification. 
  • Improve human trafficking investigations and prosecutions in Virginia through collaboration. 

Human Trafficking Investigation and Prosecution

Eligible Participants: Sworn law enforcement investigators and prosecutors 

Description: Human trafficking cases are often multifaceted and require a complex investigatory and prosecutorial skill set. To effectively build this skill set, it is imperative that stakeholders receive a solid foundational understanding of human trafficking. Using a data-driven approach, HTI provides practical, effective training for law enforcement and prosecutors to promote best practices and outcomes in the response to human trafficking.  

This training is hosted in partnership with the Commonwealth's Attorneys' Services Council (CASC) and Virginia State Police. It is facilitated by Human Trafficking Institute (HTI). 

Training Objectives: 

  • Increase awareness and understanding of human trafficking and dispel myths and misconceptions. 
  • Create an understanding and working knowledge of forced labor and commercial sex trafficking laws. 
  • Increase victim identification and improve human trafficking investigations and prosecutions. 
  • Improve the collaborative response to combat trafficking in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 

Sexual Exploitation Treatment and Training Services (SETTS)

Eligible Participants: Service providers who work directly with victims and survivors of sex trafficking 

Description: Victims and survivors of sex trafficking present with distinct needs that differ from those of other victimizations. To effectively work with this population, providers need a foundational understanding of human trafficking and trauma as well as specialized tools to provide services and promote staff wellbeing. Trauma and Hope developed the SETTS curriculum to give service providers the education and tools needed to work with victims and survivors of sex trafficking.  

This training is facilitated by Trauma and Hope. 

Training Objectives:

  • Increase understanding of trauma and its impact on victims and survivors of sex trafficking.
  • Increase understanding of human trafficking, including victimization, buyers, traffickers, and gangs.  
  • Develop working knowledge of screening, assessment, and treatment modalities. 
  • Learn tools for supporting direct services staff and building organizational capacity.
  • Improve services for human trafficking survivors in Virginia through collaboration.
