Sexual Exploitation Treatment & Training Services (SETTS)

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 5-Day Sexual Exploitation Treatment & Training Services (SETTS) course developed by Trauma and Hope. This 5-Day course provides education and training to professionals who work with sex trafficking survivors. This is an in-person event.

As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:

  • Understand different types of trauma, including: acute, chronic, and complex trauma;
  • Understand the populations most vulnerable to exploitation;
  • Understand developmental trauma and the formation of attachment disruptions;
  • Recognize gang involvement;
  • Understand the mentality of gangs, gang cultures, and recruitment tactics;
  • Understand human trafficking victimization;
  • Recognize a variety of trafficking operations;
  • Identify indicators of sex trafficking through screening;
  • Conduct screening and assessment in a variety of professional settings;
  • Identify evidence based treatment modalities to use with survivors;
  • Understand which treatment modalities are effective for individual, group, and family sessions;
  • Understand the mindset of sex buyers and traffickers;
  • Understand how demand based treatment programs work;
  • Identify treatment standards for sex buyers and traffickers;
  • Recognize how victimization can evolve into perpetration;
  • Understand CPS mandated reporting protocols;
  • Identify trafficking related laws;
  • Understand the importance of effective MDT teams;
  • Establish effective safety plans for survivors;
  • Understand vicarious trauma and burnout;
  • Develop a culture of supporting staff and building professional capacity.

Who Should Attend?

Professionals who work with sex trafficking survivors.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. The DCJS assigned course director will review the roster and will cancel any ineligible registrants. Any registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided in the registration system.

Registration and Cost: This training is free. Participants must register in advance for the training.

Time: The training runs from 9:00am-4:00pm each day with a break for lunch. The room will be open at 8:30am daily.

Travel, Lodging, and Meals

Participants are responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and meals. DCJS will provide participants with information for a group hotel rate prior to the training session.
