The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer the “STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS: The Power of Prevention” Summit on February 21-22, 2024 at the Virginia Crossings in Glen Allen, Virginia.
Experience in communities nationwide has shown that a nurturing school climate and uniform discipline practices are key elements of safe, healthy, and high achieving schools. We have learned that the zero-tolerance policies we once thought of as cutting edge simply do not work. They are, in fact, detrimental to the very climate that is needed to sustain learning and provide engagement and attachment for students in school.
The purpose of this summit is to support schools and their partners in efforts to provide a positive and safe school climate where students and staff feel supported, and are socially, emotionally, and physically safe to learn and work. Sessions will focus on some of the most necessary components for improving school climate through prevention and early intervention. Over the course of a day and a half, through a series of engaging keynotes and an opportunity for hands on access to local, and often free resources, participants will be afforded an opportunity to learn about climate, resiliency, mental health, and other important topics, and to share information and network with colleagues from around the state. The goal is for participants to return to their communities inspired and better equipped to engage in practices that improve the learning climate.
Summit participants will receive current, research-based information and resources on topics including:
Usable Strategies for Building Positive School Climate
Substance Use Among Our Youth
Toxic Relationships
Alternatives to Suspension
Trauma Sensitive Strategies in Multi-tiered Systems of Support
Classroom Management Support
And MORE!
This summit is intended for school division leaders, administrators, student services staff, school resource officers, law enforcement officers, school security officers, clinicians, and prevention specialists, as well as other professionals who serve Pre K-12 students.
Law enforcement officers will receive partial in-service credit for completion of this course.
