Ethical Storytelling for Policy Advocates

“Ethical Storytelling for Policy Advocates”

September 20, 2022 - 2:00-3:30 pm

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the virtual training “Ethical Storytelling for Policy Advocates."

Session Description:

Effective storytelling is one of our most powerful tools for learning and driving positive change in society. In an advocacy context, we have to do more than just tell compelling stories – we have to make sure our storytelling practices don’t replicate harmful social dynamics or traumatize storytellers and audiences. We also have to account for the current state of public discourse and the potential risks storytellers may face when sharing their experiences publicly. Aligning our storytelling practices with our values and our theories of change must be central to this work. In this practical, interactive training, you’ll learn:

  • Three foundational principles of effective, ethical storytelling in an advocacy context
  • How to align ethical storytelling practices with compelling messaging and calls to action to ensure your storytelling efforts are mutually beneficial for storytellers, your organization, and your issue or cause
  • How to craft solution-driven, story-forward content strategies for advocacy and fundraising campaigns
