The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the virtual training, “The Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights."

Please join us in honor of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

Session Description:

In 2016, the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights was signed into federal law. During this presentation, Katharine Manning will discuss the history of this law and how a college-aged sexual assault survivor, Amanda Nguyen, was instrumental in the creation of this law. The presenter will provide an in-depth discussion of the goals of, and the specific protections afforded sexual assault survivors by this federal law. She will also discuss how states have enacted their own protections and provisions for sexual assault survivors.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the history of the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights.
  2. List challenges faced by sexual assault survivors which led to the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights.
  3. Identify the rights and protections afforded to sexual assault survivors.
  4. Identify trends and resources from various states, including Virginia, related to the Sexual Assault Survivor's Bill of Rights.

Katharine Manning is the author of The Empathetic Workplace: Five Steps to a Compassionate, Calm, and Confident Response to Trauma on the Job and the President of Blackbird DC. She has worked on issues of trauma and victimization for more than 25 years.
