(2023 IOTLE Pre-Conference) Two Sides to An Incident: When the Trauma of Law Enforcement Comes Home

This session is also acting as the Pre-Conference of the 2023 Impact of Trauma on Law Enforcement Officers Conference.

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce that for the first time, spouses or significant others of Virginia First Responders are invited to attend this pre-conference training.

This course will enable the participant to define major/psychological trauma related to policing and first responders. It discusses how long exposure to traumatic events can result in moods ranging from anger, self-doubt, and problems thinking and sleeping. The instructor will provide options for educating the family and spouses of participants during traumatic events in addition to long-term exposure to trauma.

Learning Objectives:

Class participants will be able to define trauma related to the jobs of First Responders.
Acknowledge the impact of trauma on peers, family members, and themselves.

Understand the impact of officers’ mental wellness after trauma has been introduced and how to heal.

Who should attend:

This conference is open to sworn law enforcement officers, emergency communication operators, peer support clinicians and other public safety professionals. Partial In-service Credit:

Law enforcement officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours.

Meals, Travel and Lodging:

Lunch will be served for this event. Participants are responsible for all other meals and travel expenses.

Cost and Registration:

There is no fee to attend the pre - conference and training materials will be provided. 

Pre-registration is required. Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
