Aberrant Behavior Recognition Training

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce: “Aberrant Behavior Recognition.” Funding for this training is provided through the Department of Homeland Security’s Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant.   

This 4-hour training will

  • Help participants to understand modes of violence.

  • Introduce participants to concepts of violence prevention and the role of threat assessment in violence prevention.

  • Help participants to understand concepts of concerning, aberrant, and threatening behavior, including the importance of context in examining behavior.  

  • Help participants to understand the importance of bystander engagement and the role of reporting in threat assessment.

Who should attend?

This training is intended for local government administrators, public health officials, law enforcement, campus administrators and faculty, k-12 educators and school administrators, mental health and counseling professionals, business leaders, and other interested community stakeholders, and especially persons working with threat assessment teams. 

Partial In-service Credit

Partial in-service credit for law enforcement is pending


There is no registration fee for this course.

Transportation, Lodging, Meals

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging, and meal expenses.  

Training Times and Details 

Registration begins at 7:30 AM

Training runs from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM


Pre-registration is required.  There is no cost to attend this training.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
