The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce a new investigative training, “Basic Interviewing Training” presented by Justice 3D.

Description

The “Basic Interviewing” course will provide an introduction into three key interviews conducted in law enforcement today. These interviews include Witness Interviewing, Trauma Informed Interviewing, and Empathy Based Interrogation.

With witness interviewing, cognitive interviewing techniques are used for witnesses and non-traumatized victims – usually victims of non-violent crimes. Cognitive interviewing techniques are empirically validated, aid in accurate retrieval of memories and focus on creating a contextual statement.

Trauma-informed interviewing is used for victims who have experienced a violent and/or traumatic situation. Trauma-informed interviewing techniques are based on an understanding of the neurobiology of trauma and how trauma impacts the encoding and recall of memories.

Empathy-based interrogation (EBI) is for suspects. EBI is a research-based philosophy focused on understanding the subject’s point of view and motivation for committing an offense and provides incentives for the subject to share accurate information.
