Description:
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Center for School and Campus Safety (VCSCS) is pleased to offer a two-hour virtual workshop to support “Best Practices for Digital Mapping Implementation.”
In 2023, in response to the Code of Virginia § 22.1-279.8 requiring school boards to create a detailed and accurate floor plan for each public-school building in the local school division, VCSCS provided an opportunity for public school divisions to acquire digital mapping of their schools and grounds using Collaborative Response Graphics (CRG). This standardized method of mapping allows all responding law enforcement agencies access to a digital map of the school in crisis to assist in the response and entry to the school.
To date, 128 of Virginia’s 131 public school divisions have participated in the program, which aids first responders in the case of a multi-agency response. This course will provide best practice implementation for schools and first responders. A summary of topics to be covered is below:
School best practices for implementation:
• storing and staging of CRG maps
• importance of keeping maps updated as changes occur
• incorporating CRG maps into emergency response plans and school security infrastructure
• providing training to school personnel so they understand how to communicate utilizing CRGs
• attending CRG facilitated implementation meetings with response partners
• conducting tabletop training with response partners
First responder best practices for implementation:
• making printable copies available in patrol cars and command vehicles
• integration of CRG maps onto department CAD platforms and into mobile computer terminals in vehicles
• storing of CRGs and training documents in learning management systems
• incorporating CRG maps into emergency response protocols
• ensuring mutual aide partners have access to local CRG maps
• ensuring 911 call centers have access to CRG maps
• conducting tabletop exercises and drills utilizing CRG maps
