Crime Prevention Specialist Recertification Training

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce “Crime Prevention Specialist Recertification” training.  

Description:

This course builds on the material from the basic crime prevention training and fulfills the 40 hours of additional crime prevention training required to recertify as a Crime Prevention Specialist.  The training will feature a combination of lectures, group discussions, and practical exercises. The course meets the requirement outlined in code (6VAC20-180-50) for Crime Prevention Specialist recertification.

Conducting lighting assessments requires that part of the training take place after dark. Thus, training on September 28, 2026, will start at 12:00 pm and run until 9:00 pm.

• Understanding Locks for Crime Prevention Practitioners
• Public Speaking and Media Relations for Law Enforcement
• Autism Awareness for First Responders
• School Security
• Computer Crimes
• Domestic Violent Extremism and Hate Groups

Who Should Attend:

This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers, school and campus security officers and those working in crime prevention functions at local, state, and federal law enforcement and government agencies, including colleges and universities. If demand exceeds available space, priority will be given to Virginia Certified Crime Prevention Specialists with certifications expiring at the end of 2026. 

Partial In-service Credit:

Partial In-Service Credit (PIC) for Virginia law enforcement officers will be available.

Transportation, Lodging, and Meals:

Participants are responsible for transportation, meals, lodging arrangements, and related expenses.

Training Times and Details:

Registration begins at 11:00 am on Monday, and training runs from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm for the lighting assessment portion.

Registration begins at 7:30 am Tuesday-Friday, and training runs from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cost and Registration:

There is no cost to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course coordinator to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Denied registrants will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
