To assist schools in complying with the Code of Virginia § 22.1-79.4 (creation of threat assessment teams) and the Code of Virginia § 9.1-184 (collection and reporting of data by threat assessment teams), along with new training requirements effective July 1, 2023, the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety (VCSCS) offers a basic threat assessment training. The goal of this training is to provide K-12 threat assessment teams with essential tools and resources to conduct and manage threat cases as required by the Code of Virginia. VCSCS offers a half-day basic threat assessment training at no cost at the request of schools/divisions.
Topics to be covered include the definition of a threat, recognition of concerning/aberrant behavior, principles of threat assessment, understanding the behavioral threat assessment process and pathway to violence, mandated roles and responsibilities of threat assessment teams, assessing and classifying cases, overcoming barriers to and the importance of reporting, nexus between threat assessment and suicide risk assessment, and information sharing. A case scenario will be woven into the training.
Who Should Attend:
This webinar is open to individuals currently serving on a public K-12 school threat assessment team or the school division oversight committee.
Partial In-Service Credit:
Partial In-Service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers will not be available.
Training Time and Details:
Training begins at 8:30 am and ends at 12:00 pm.
Cost and Registration:
There is no registration fee to attend this training. Pre-registration is required. Please use a valid work email address (not a personal email address) to register for this training.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS-assigned course coordinator to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Denied registrants will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
