“The Safe Havens for Pets of Domestic Violence Survivors Partnership”

October 15, 2021 from 9:30 am-11:30 am

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the virtual training, “The Safe Havens for Pets of Domestic Violence Survivors Partnerships.” Dr. Mary Lou Randour, Ph.D., Senior Advisor on Animals and Family Violence at the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), will provide a critical examination of the links between domestic violence and pet abuse. She will also examine the policies and programs developed to address this relationship, including pet protection order legislation found in 37 states, the Pets and Animal Welfare Act, and safe havens for pets of domestic violence victims.

Other presenters from AWI, including Sydney Hearst, Valerie Pena, Anabel Kearley, and Gabriella Castillo, will detail the Animal Welfare Institute’s (AWI) Safe Havens for Pet of Domestic Violence Survivors national directory project, including an overview of the state of safe havens in the United States. Additionally, the presenters will introduce SH4P, a social media presence for the Safe Havens for Pets of Domestic Violence Survivors Partnership, a platform for domestic violence advocacy groups to collaborate with AWI and share resources and information with each other. The presenters will highlight some of the SH4P spotlighted safe havens for pets of domestic violence survivors and offer guidance on funding strategies for starting a safe haven for pets of domestic violence survivors.
