The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Department of Education, Department of Health, and Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services are partnering to offer a two-day summit entitled Strengthening Connections: Challenging Conversations to Enhance School Climate on November 29 and 30, 2016, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Richmond-Midlothian.
The purpose of this summit is to support schools and school partners in their efforts to provide a positive and safe school climate where students and educators feel socially, emotionally, and physically safe to learn and work. Sessions will focus on the difficult conversations that need to happen in schools to facilitate discussions about improving school climate. The summit will address the three components of the U.S. Department of Education’s Safe and Supportive Schools model of school climate – Student Engagement (relationships, respect for diversity, school participation), Safety (social-emotional safety, physical safety, substance use), and the School Environment (physical environment, academic environment, wellness, disciplinary environment). Participants will leave with tools and resources to bring back to their school buildings and divisions for low cost and high impact implementation.
Summit participants will receive current, research-based information and resources on topics including:
