Be Safe Virginia

Be Safe Virginia is a program focused on educating students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in Virginia’s Public Schools. The program's goals are to educate our youngest community members on important public safety topics in an age-appropriate manner. Themes range in scope from learning about the role of community helpers, to how to stay safe during in-person and online interactions, as well as understanding the impacts of substance abuse and bullying. Looking for material to help secondary instructors, parents, and students understand the laws that apply to Virginia teens? Visit the Virginia Rules website.

School-Law Enforcement Partnership

The School-Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) curriculum is designed to enhance collaboration between local schools and law enforcement agencies. It provides comprehensive training on the distinct roles and responsibilities of School Resource Officers (SROs) and school administrators, clarifying expectations. This training emphasizes adherence to legal standards and best practices, ensuring that both educators and law enforcement officers are knowledgeable about relevant laws, including those pertaining to student rights and school safety.

Crisis Management Plan

To comply with the Code of Virginia § 22.1-279.8, each school shall develop a written school crisis, emergency management, and medical response plan. This curriculum covers the Before, During, and After of crisis management planning. Participants will learn federal and state legal requirements and how to identify members of their safety team(s), areas of concern on campus and inside buildings, and reunification sites appropriate for their building(s). They will also learn how to implement actions using the Standard Response Protocol and address planning concerns for individuals with functional and access needs. This curriculum will assist divisions and schools with completing the Model Crisis Management Plan Template.

Critical Incident Response

To comply with the Code of Virginia § 22.1-137.3, training on safety procedures during an emergency on school property is to be delivered to each student and employee at least once each school year. Emergency response actions typically taught in Virginia schools include the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, as well as principles developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University. While this CIR student training provides a brief overview of SRP, the main focus is on ALERRT’s RACE acronym and associated actions: React, Activate, Care, and Evacuate. All concepts and actions are taught to students using trauma-sensitive and developmentally appropriate instructional approaches, beginning with a foundational introduction and gradually building on that knowledge over time.
