Communicating Through Crisis: Navigating Critical Incidents

Description: 

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in conjunction with Safer Schools Together (SST), is pleased to announce a virtual “Communicating Through Crisis: Navigating Critical Incidents” training. In this session, attendees will explore effective critical incident response strategies for school administrators. As a school administrator, you are often at the center of a critical incident and are responsible for managing the crisis and communicating with staff, students, parents, and others about the situation. The form and scope of a critical incident can vary, but there are some key strategies you can use to effectively and quickly communicate with different audiences. By understanding these strategies, you can ensure that you are sharing the appropriate information in the most effective and timely way. 

This training includes: 

  • Examples of communication through various scenarios 

  • Important content to include in key messages such as direction, status, actions, and compassion Cautions in communication 

  • Post-incident communication example 

  • Current trends specific to your location 

  • An overview of doxing, swatting, and incels 

  • Recent case files handled by SST 

  • Best practices of communication for public safety on threat-related incidents 

  • Templates and an interactive resource guide 

  

Who should attend:  

This training is open to K-12 and IHE staff, school and campus security officers, and law enforcement. 

  

Partial In-service Credit:  

Law Enforcement PIC is not offered for this virtual training.  

  

Certificate of Completion: 

Participants that attend the entire training will receive 4 credit hours that can be applied to CSO and SSO recertification. 

  

Cost and Registration: 

There is no fee associated with this training. Pre-registration is required. 

  

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
