Disability Awareness for Law Enforcement Officers

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer four opportunities to attend “Disability Awareness Training for Public Safety”.   The ability to respond to individuals with disabilities has posed varying challenges to officers across the country and high-profile cases have exposed the need for more involved awareness and education. The characteristics, and how to recognize, identify and properly respond to individuals with disabilities, are imperative across settings. As the population increases and more individuals are active in the community, the need to ensure accurate and appropriate response is critical.

  • Role of caregivers and service providers

  • Candid video instruction

  • Federal/municipality roles & responsibilities

  • Disability community perspective

  • School-aged Children with Autism

  • Challenging scenarios & behaviors

  • Current trends and topics

  • Americans with Disabilities Act

  • Etiquette and interaction skills

  • Extensive amount of resources

Who should attend?

This training is intended for sworn law enforcement officers, campus security officers and school security officers.

Partial In-service Credit

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for Virginia law enforcement officers, campus security officers and school security officers will be available.  All participants will receive a certificate of attendance after completing an online evaluation following the training. 

Travel, Lodging, and Meals

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging and meals. 

Training Time and Details

Check in will begin at 7:45 a.m. and course will be held from 8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day

Cost and Registration

There is no cost to attend this training. Pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
