Description

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer “Impact of Jailers: Peers Helping Peers” training. This 2-day course will be held at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Ashburn, VA on October 17 – 18, 2023. 

Two types of training classes that discuss how officers can develop beneficial coping strategies in their personal and professional lives: One, the instructor wants the participants in the training class to utilize what is discussed for their benefit. Second, the instructors share their experiences and hope most participants can relate to them. 'Impact of Jailers: Peers Helping Peers' is a training course designed for jail/ correctional officers. It guides officers to be open with each other and learn from their peers while identifying each officer's personal or professional obstacles and using active coping strategies to overcome their obstacles.

Topics to be addressed include: 

  • Learning Our Stress

  • Our Career and Loved Ones

  • The Law Enforcement Distress Syndrome (LEDS) Study

  • The Trauma of Our Profession

Who should attend?

This training is intended for jailers and corrections officers.  

Important Need to Know Information

  • Dress comfortable. DO NOT wear uniform. Examples: appropriate workout attire, jeans and appropriate t-shirt.

  • No electronic devices will be permitted into training.

  • Bring a change of clothes.

  • Bring hygiene and/or shower items.

  • Prepare to bring a guest on the second day of training. This guest must be someone who played a significant part in your life. (More information will be provided during the training.)

  • No personal notepads will be permitted into training.

Partial In-service Credit

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for Virginia law enforcement officers will be available. 

Cost

There is no cost to attend this training, however pre-registration is required.  

Travel, Lodging and Meals

Participants are responsible for their transportation and lodging arrangements and expenses.

Training Time and Details

  • Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. and course will be held from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm  

Registration

Pre-registration is required via Benchmark Learning Management System.

  • Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.

  • Acceptance letters will be sent by Chris Scuderi, the DCJS course sponsor, upon approval into the course. The 2 links embedded into the letter MUST be completed prior to class.
