Core Competencies for Local Probation and Pretrial Practices (CORE) is an enhanced approach to learning with a blended format that incorporates computer-based learning that uses the Learning Management System (LMS) Relias, distance learning exercises, virtual led sessions and on-the-job training, to introduce core principles, job skills, and the tools needed to effectively apply intervention strategies and techniques. The training is facilitated by DCJS staff and members of the DCJS Training Advisory Group.

The Training Structure for CORE is as follows:

  • Essential Skills – LMS Course Series 
  • Essential Skills – Virtual Led Series 
  • Specialized Skills/Pretrial – Virtual Instructor Led
  • Specialized Skills/Probation – Virtual Instructor Led

Content will include, but is not limited to:

  • Minimum Standards
  • Legal and Liability
  • Ethics
  • Cultural Competencies
  • PREA
  • Virginia Courts and Courtroom Demeanor
  • Basic Safety for Probation and Pretrial Officers
  • Managing Resistance
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Evidence-Based Practices / Effective Interventions / Risk-Need-Responsivity Model
  • Virginia Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument (VPRAI)
  • Modified Offender Screening Tool (MOST)
  • Offender Screening Tool (OST)
  • Effective Success Planning and Management

Who should attend?

This training is for newly hired local probation/pretrial officers only. Existing staff who wish to have a “refresher” may enroll in CORE training at their supervisor’s discretion. This is subject to the approval of the AJP Training Coordinator.

Please use the Skills Checklist once you complete all training. The checklist needs to be submitted back to DCJS using dcjscore@dcjs.virginia.gov .
