Fit for Duty: Optimizing Physical Health and Fitness for First Responders

Course Description:

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer “Fit for Duty: Optimizing Physical Health and Fitness for First Responders.” This comprehensive course presented by NOTA Fitness is designed to help first responders build and maintain the physical strength, endurance, and flexibility needed to thrive in their demanding careers.

This course recognizes the unique physical demands of law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, corrections officers, and dispatchers. It focuses on functional fitness strategies that enhance job performance, reduce the risk of injury, and promote long-term physical wellness. Participants will learn key exercises and fitness routines tailored to improve cardiovascular health, muscular endurance, flexibility, and physical readiness. With a focus on practical application, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge to create personalized fitness plans, optimize their physical health, and perform at their best on and off the job.

By the end of this course, first responders will be empowered to improve their fitness levels, boost energy, prevent burnout, and ultimately enhance their ability to serve and protect with strength and stamina.

Who should attend?

This training is open to all first responder groups, including, but not limited to, law enforcement, fire/EMS, EMTs, dispatchers, and corrections. Additionally, retired first responders, civilian peer support, allied professionals who work with first responders, and mental health clinicians who are culturally competent in first responder wellness are encouraged to attend.

Partial In-service Credit:

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for Virginia law enforcement officers will be available.

Travel, Lodging, and Meals:

Participants are responsible for their transportation, lodging arrangements, and expenses.

Training Time and Details:

Check-in will begin at 7:30 am. The course will be held from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Participants should wear appropriate clothing suitable for physical activity. No shorts or uniforms, please.

Cost and Registration:

There is no cost to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required.

Please note that the DCJS registration system cannot sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. The DCJS-assigned course director is responsible for reviewing the roster and making a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
