Guardians of Democracy

Description

Guardians of Democracy is designed to examine the role of the modern police officer in today’s society. We analyze the most current events, dispel media myths, cite the statistical realities of police use of force and examine the relationship between the community and the police. In addition, officers will learn about the physiological and emotional aspects of acute stress and how it affects their ability to perform professionally during stress events. Finally, students will develop an understanding of human nature and learn the incredible importance of developing professional and effective communication skills.

Calibre’s Philosophy on Communication Skills for Law Enforcement: To succeed professionally you must be a human behavior specialist. It is imperative that you be proficient at reading others in order to detect deception, recognize preattack  cues and recognize when people are emotionally charged. Modern police officers must be adept at developing rapport and deescalating people who are irrational. Finally, officers must learn how to communicate proficiently while engaged in  high‐stress situations.

While the course is designed to be dynamic, practical and fun, it takes the subject of officer safety and police professionalism seriously. During the seminar, numerous case studies will be examined and videos of up-to-date police/citizen encounters will be analyzed and critiqued in an effort to assit officers in improving their performance.
