The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce “The Shield of Support: Suicide Prevention in First Responders” presented by NOTA Fitness. "The Shield of Support" is an interactive webinar designed to equip first responders with the knowledge and skills to combat the silent battles of suicide. Backed by expert insights, this course addresses the unique challenges faced by first responders, providing practical tools for recognizing and intervening in suicidal ideation. Together, we aim to build a resilient, supportive environment for all first responders.

In this workshop, participants will have an opportunity to learn about:

  • Suicide Statistics in First Responders
  • Understanding the Unique Challenges Faced by First Responders
  • Addressing Stigma and Barriers to Help-Seeking in First Responders
  • Promoting Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Initiatives in Public Safety
  • Realities of Depression and Alcohol Use: Impact on Suicide Risk
  • Recognizing Warning Signs and Risk Factors for Suicide
  • Your shield of support starts here!

This course is being instructed by Mary Ghali, Program Director at Nota Fitness.

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is open to all first responder groups, including but not limited to, law enforcement, fire/EMS, EMTs, dispatchers and corrections. Additionally, retired first responders as well as civilian peer support and mental health clinicians who are culturally competent in first responder wellness are encouraged to attend

Partial In-service Credit

Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for law enforcement officers will not be available.  

Training Times and Details

Training will be from 10:00AM-11:30AM and 1:00PM-2:30PM, virtually

 Cost and Registration

There is no registration fee to attend this training.  

Pre-registration is required.  

Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
