Description
The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in a partnership with the New Mexico Tech Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center is pleased to offer two opportunities to attend “Understanding and Planning for School Bombing Incidents” (UPSBI) training.
The UPSBI course provides first responders and school staff with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond to school bomb threats and school bombing incidents. This course provides information on the purpose and function of school emergency management plans, warning signs of aggressive student behavior, critical actions when responding to a school bombing threat, recognition of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and components, and preventive school bombing incident measures.
Learning Objectives:

Identify the purpose and function of a school emergency management plan including the four phases of emergency management.

Recognize warning signs of aggressive behavior.

Identify response actions based on scenario types and bombing hazards.

Identify Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and their components.

Recognize school security measures and training components necessary in an effective school bombing response plan.
Who should attend:
This training is open to sworn law enforcement officers, campus security officers, school security officers and public and private sector critical infrastructure owners/operators interested in or required to have a basic awareness of bombing prevention measures.
Partial In-service Credit:
Law enforcement officers, campus security officers and school security officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours.
Travel, Lodging and Meals
Transportation, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of the participant.
Training Time and Details

Check-in for the training will begin at 7:30 AM. Training will begin at 8:00 AM and conclude at 12:00 PM.
Please note that for the April 4, 2023 Virginia Beach class there is a Civilian Respone and Casualty Care (CRCC) Afternoon Training available in the same location from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Please click here for more details and to register.
Cost and Registration
There is no cost to attend this training. Pre-registration is required via DCJS’ online registration system.
Please note that the DCJS registration system does not have the capacity to sort eligible from ineligible registrants. Therefore, anyone who registers will receive a confirmation. It is the responsibility of the DCJS assigned course director to review the roster and make a final determination on acceptance into the course. Registrants not accepted will be notified via the email address provided during registration.
